The West Tisbury Police Department is pleased to announce Det. Nikolaj Wojtkielo as our 2023 Police Officer of the Year. Nikolaj joined the department as a reserve officer in 2015 then returned as a full time officer in 2017, in 2019 he became the department’s detective. During his tenure Det. Wojtkielo has become the depart-ment’s accreditation manager, a member of the Martha’s Vineyard Tactical Response team and Martha’s Vineyard Drug Task Force.
Nikolaj continues to be a core member of the department with his ability to train the newest officers along with advance his own training within the ever growing computer world. He’s a “nuts and bolts” guy who can fix a technical computer board, or pick up a farmer’s entire chicken house. He completes his tasks with positive results. Nikojal plans on completing his Master’s Degree in 2024 and will be focusing on further investigative and supervisory training in the year ahead.

Nikolaj remains a successful example of an “Islander” who understands our unique community and cares about the outcome for all involved. His ability to interact with citizens and establish a comfortable rapport has proven an invaluable skill that has served him well. While he provides a professional service to the entire community, he demonstrates a lot of compassion in his work and is a great model of what we want here at the department. Nikolaj has learned to relate and connect to our citizens on a daily basis and truly understands our best characteristic is often just listening.
This award is selected from the entire department based on nominations from peers and I am proud to
announce Det. Nikolaj Wojtkielo as our 2023 Officer of the Year.
