About Us

The Martha's Vineyard Refuse Disposal and Resource Recovery District was started in 1983. During the Spring of 1987, the District completed an extensive study that reviewed various solid waste management strategies for the island's refuse. Based on economic, environmental, and technical factors, the District determined that disposal at the SEMASS resource recovery facility in Rochester, MA., coupled with an extensive recycling effort, is the most economical and environmentally sound solid waste management strategy for Martha's Vineyard, with a contract renewal that ends 12/2024.

The District is made up of four towns: Edgartown, West Tisbury, Chilmark, and Aquinnah. 750 West Tisbury Road is both the main Transfer Station and the Edgartown drop-off center. The Edgartown Transfer Station proudly serves all residential and commercial clients on Martha's Vineyard.

The refuse district processes and ships over 7,000 tons annually of waste and construction material. Over 6,000 tons of the material were delivered to the SEMASS Waste to Energy Facility in Rochester, MA, and the remaining tonnage was recycled as Construction Material delivered to New England Recycling located in Taunton, MA. Our recycling efforts also removed over 1,200 tons of mixed single-stream recycling, 200 tons of various metals, over 200 tons of batteries, 15 tons of tires, and 500 tons of leaves/brush.

We are proud to announce that over 500 households participated in the District's Hazardous Household Waste Collection program during 2017. After 28 years, the program continues to grow and provide Island residents the opportunity to dispose of hazardous material in an environmentally correct and safe way.
