Info for West Tisbury Home Owners Regarding PFAS and Testing

To: All Concerned West Tisbury Home Owners Regarding PFAS

The West Tisbury Board of Health is advising anyone who might be concerned about PFAS levels in their wells, to have their well water tested for PFAS.  Please know that your local Board of Health is working closely with the Department of Environmental Protection in their efforts to assess the situation and guide you in taking the steps necessary to insure your safety, if in fact you are at a concerned level of risk.

The free PFAS well water testing provided by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has ended, meaning you will need to arrange and pay for any testing that is done. Below are testing laboratories located here in Massachusetts and approved by the State of Massachusetts.

The primary contact for testing PFAS at DEP is Angela Gallagher, and she has made herself available to answer questions.  Please note that additional test were taken by DEP at selected sites on 5/3/2022 to better assess the current situation.  Depending upon the latest results, further test (conducted by DEP) and/or instructions may be forthcoming.

Please NoteIf you are concerned you should go forward with arranging testing as soon as possible.  Listed below are the answers to two frequent and important questions:

  • If you are concerned It is advised that you drink bottled water until your water is tested for PFAS.
  • To date there has not been a detect close to or exceeding 200 ppt, the level at which bathing would be unsafe.
  • Testing Laboratories:  https://eeaonline.eea.state.ma.us/DEP/Labcert/Labcert.aspx (Feel free to contact the lab of your choice for pricing, to order sample water bottles for testing and instructions).

Below you will find answers and information pertaining to many of the basic questions you will have concerning PFAS.  Please feel free to contact me here at the office (508) 696-0105 or Angela Gallagher at (508)946-2790 if you have further questions or need further instructions or assistance.
